Try a River Cruise

It's time to travel again! Intimate, luxurious and relaxing. From tiny villages to cosmopolitian cities, enjoy your long deserved vacation on the most scenic rivers in the world.

What are River Cruises?

People have used rivers for centuries to go from town to town, transport goods and sightseeing. It’s the best way to see the heart of a city. Kingsbridge travel will put together the perfect river cruise itinerary for an awe-inspiring trip based on your personal travel preferences.

River cruises are a value option

River cruising combines relaxation, experiences, and cultures. They sail the heart of the country and introduce you to cities and towns that can’t be accessed on traditional ocean cruises. Take only a few steps away from your ship to visit castles, stroll through country fairs and explore iconic landmarks.

River cruises are relaxing

If you prefer, sit and watch the world go by from the top deck with a book or a drink in hand and enjoy the nature around you. Nothing is as peaceful as floating down the river after exploring major cities and local towns during the day.

River cruises are intimate

With smaller capacity and crowds, river cruises provide a more friendly and cozy atmosphere, allowing you to make friends with your fellow passengers and crew. Enjoy onboard activities with other guests and make your trip, if you travel alone, feel more like a family excursion than a solitary vacation.

River cruises are casual

Your ship is your floating home base, you only pack and unpack once. No need to rise early to pack and get your luggage ready for the next city. Everything is included, from meals and transportation to excursions. Relax and let us do the planning.

River cruises are not boring

With a new port every day, your choice of cities and towns to explore is endless. A smaller vessel doesn't mean fewer choices for activities, you can choose from taking slow walks to food and wine tastings, to hiking and biking tours. While there are not big entertainments at night, there is always music in the lounge, accented with local entertainers who are brought in to add local flavor.

What our customers are saying

  • "Our travel agent, Diane Ross, planned a trip-of-a-lifetime for us. We wanted to cruise, but also to tour. Because Mom is 88, navigating around a large ship would have been too strenuous. A river cruise was the answer! Diane had so much knowledge about various lines, and was able to narrow down the selection for us. An elegant environment was important to us, as well as cuisine. She found an ideal itinerary and knew which cabins were the most spacious and well-located. The ship’s staff knowledge of the (60th) birthday made the celebration more memorable (which Diane facilitated). She inquired about our interests to enhance our enjoyment of the trip. As a result, while docked in Paris, she arranged a Walking Tour of chocolate boutiques for us! Everyone loves chocolate, but I think few travel agents take the time to learn about their clients’ likes and dislikes, so that they can personalize their trip in such a lovely and different way. In addition to her professionalism, Diane’s depth of traveling experience allows her to recommend and implement trips for clients on every scale, from a local getaway to an around-the-world voyage. I can’t recommend her services highly enough."

  • "Dear Diane, I've just returned from my French river cruise/stay in Paris, and am so pleased with this thrilling experience! After our cruise, the hotel you selected in Paris was well-located, comfortable, and affordable yet not chintzy. We especially loved the (included) elegant and expansive breakfast. In spite of all the joys Paris has to offer, the highlight was my day at the Jacquemart-Andre museum, something I would never have known about except for the advice of the concierge. This is the second trip you've arranged for me -- the first being my Mediterranean cruise and stay in Rome with my grandson -- and both have been stellar experiences with not a hitch. I'm eager to go to Europe again soon, and I can't imagine ever using any other travel agent."

  • "I want to recommend Diane Ross of Kingsbridge Travel. I knew I wanted to take a river cruise, but I had no idea of which one, when, or what ship. Diane gave me what she called “river cruising 101”. She explained the difference between ocean and river cruising and found the perfect cruise for me. She even planned my before and after cruise stays and recommended optional excursions. If you want to take a river cruise, call Diane. Alice L"

  • "Diane Ross was extremely competent, professional, and always available to assist with any concerns or questions I had. She always promptly returned phone calls or emails throughout the planning process, and even on one occasion during the trip. Diane guided me every step of the way and attended to every detail to make my dream trip a reality. Thanks to her expertise, my experience was worry and stress free. I will be planning a return trip to Europe, and wouldn't consider anyone else as my agent."

River Cruises F.A.Q.

  • 1. What is the best river cruise line?

It depends on what you are looking for. There are river cruises to suit different budgets, different levels of luxury and different activity levels

  • 2. Why are river cruises so expensive?

They include more than traditional ocean cruises. Beer and wine and included with lunch and dinner (some have included alcohol all day). Excursions are included in every port. River cruise ships are much smaller and there is more personalized service than ocean cruises.

  • 3. What is the cheapest river cruise line?

Kingsbridge Travel never works with the cheapest lines. We look at value for what you get. We will give you options at different price levels and tell you the advantages of each. Also, prices vary among lines depending on what the current promotions are.

  • 4. Which are the best river cruises in Europe?

It depends on what you are looking for. The more information you give us about your requirements (type of stateroom), food, budget and activity level, the better we can help you find the perfect cruise for you.

  • 5. Will I get seasick?

Unlike ocean cruises, people almost never get seasick. You are floating on a river with little current. River cruise ships also go slower than ocean liners because the distance between ports is shorter. Often you have to look outside to even know you are moving.

  • 6. How long are stops in each city?

Usually you are in port for most of the day. Occasionally there may be a port (like Vienna) where you overnight, but that is rare. Most often you have time not only for your included excursion, but also time to explore on your own. Most start and/or end in major cities where you can add time before and/or after your cruise.

  • 7. Which river cruise lines are all inclusive?

There are various levels of inclusions. The most all inclusive would be Uniworld, Tauck and Crystal.

  • 8. Are river cruises worth the money?

Yes!!! People rarely take one river cruise. After experiencing life on the river, people invariably book another. It is a great way to travel.

  • 9. Are river cruises Boring?

Since river cruises were initially appealing to the senior population, there was a misconception that it was boring. If you want a casino and lots of entertainment at night, river cruising may not be for you. However if you are interested in destination immersion, you will find plenty to do. River cruising is now appealing to younger clientele and the river cruise companies are adjusting to meet their needs. More active excursions are being added to some of them as well as lots of special interest cruises. To best determine if river cruising is right for you, speak to an expert.

  • 10. How do I get the best deal on a river cruise?

Book early. River cruises are popular and there are fewer cabins to fill. So space books early and the best promotions are when pricing first comes out.

  • 11. What it the best month to take a European river cruise?

European river cruises usually start March or April and run through October. It depends on what you are looking for. Cooler temperatures are at the beginning and end of the season, although with lower prices. It also depends on what you want to see. Tulip season (Rhine cruise) is April and May. There are also Christmas market cruises (only Rhine and Danube) in November and December.

  • 12. Are meals included on river cruises?

    Yes!

  • 13. Do river cruises have entertainment?

River cruises do not have entertainment like you find on ocean cruises. There are no casinos. Generally there is a piano player every evening in the lounge. Most will also bring on local entertainment some evenings. Check with your river cruise expert on specific lines.

  • 14. What is the dress code for river cruises?

There are never formal nights on river cruises. Dress code is more relaxed. Generally men will wear a colored shirt and pants. Some will bring a sport coat, but it is not required. Women will wear pants or casual dress.

  • 15. What is the average age on a river cruise?

Hard to say. River cruising started with the senior population and is getting more popular with others. Some lines allow children and some have specific journeys for multi-generations.

  • 16. Do river cruises travel at night?

Generally ships are in port during the day and traveling to the next port at night. However most cruises will have one day of sailing along the most scenic parts of the river.

  • 17. What are some of the best river cruise routes?

For first time river cruisers, I usually recommend the Danube, the Rhine or the Seine. They each have 7 night itineraries and are the most popular. For a longer (14 night cruise) I recommend Amsterdam to Budapest, which includes a number of different rivers.
