You’ve toured around Rome visiting its many eternal treasures, tasted the gelato of Florence, and floated down the Grand Canal of Venice…now what? Despite all of those destinations being magnificent in their own ways and undoubtedly the most popular spots to explore, Italy has plenty more gems to be discovered.
WHEN IN ITALY, VISIT AMALFI COAST
Of them is the alluring Amalfi Coast; a 43-mile seaside stretch just a hop, skip and jump away from Naples where travelers from all over the globe come to soak up its unmatched beauty, stunning blue seas, and plush atmosphere. If that sounds to you like the perfect Italian getaway, here are some spots on the Amalfi Coast you can look forward to enjoying…
The white building at the top of the hill is Villa Franca. A lovely hotel with gorgeous views and charming rooms.
POSITANO ON THE AMALFI COAST
Regarded by well-known artist Paul Klee as “the only place in the world conceived on a vertical rather than a horizontal axis”, you’ll find Positano clinging to the side of cliffs as its many cubist buildings make a tier up toward the mountains. As the most photographed fishing village in the world, Positano on the Amalfi Coast is surely one spot you’ll want to charge up that camera of yours and get ready for plenty of photo ops. Spend your time here exploring its many beautiful beaches, take in the rich history at the several archaeological sites, hike its mountains, and of course indulge in the delicious native cuisine.
THE SEASIDE TOWN OF SORRENTO
Another undeniable gem of this Italian region and one well worth the journey, the seaside town of Sorrento invites its many year-round guests to enjoy its tasty limoncello, marvel at its Romanesque churches, and to simply wander about its many pedestrian-only streets (the best way to soak up the town). As an extremely tourist-friendly spot, you’ll find plenty to do while there, which will more than likely mean shopping, hiking, enjoying the welcoming atmosphere that seems to exude its every shop, café, and restaurant.
VISITING CAPRI
Once you’ve done your fair share of Sorrento explorations, you’re just a short 20-minute ferry ride away from one of the Amalfi Coast’s most loved destinations of all; Capri. Not only will you most likely be keeping your eyes peeled for famous celebrities that have been known to pay Capri a visit from time to time, you’ll also be feasting your eyes upon what makes this small island so incredibly alluring to all. To make the most of your time there, you’ll want to be sure to visit the Piazzetta, explore the famous Blue Grotto, take in the views at Monte Solaro, and check out Marina Piccola where the tale of Ulysses and its seducing sirens were inspired.
RAVELLO
Last but absolutely not least, Ravello is often regarded as the “jewel in the coastal crown” of the Amalfi Coast. Sitting atop a mountain that stretches 350 meters above sea level and boasting a certain appeal unlike any other mentioned above, Ravello tends to be the place where there’s just a bit more hope of relaxation, peace, and calmness. A town that has inspired several A-list writers, artists, and musicians unquestionably by its dazzling garden estates, fascinating architecture, and stunning views overlooking the swells of the sea below, it surely won’t take much time to realize why so many have come to fall in love with Ravello’s offerings.
Travel Tip: If at all possible, try to plan your trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast on the off-seasons of early spring or late fall where accommodation prices will be down and the crowds won’t be so overwhelming.
