River cruising has been one of the fastest growing and most popular forms of travel for the last 5 years. But until recently, river cruising has been mostly for the 55+ demographic. But not anymore!!
Several river cruise lines have enhanced and expanded their products to appeal to all generations. Here are a few examples.
MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILIES
Adventures by Disney partnered with AMA Waterways several years ago to create river cruises specifically designed for families. Itineraries include the Rhine or the Danube with activities that all generations will enjoy. Though they will accept children from age 4 and up, these trips are more appropriate for age 8 and up. AMA has reconfigured staterooms to include triples and connecting rooms, which other river cruise lines lack.
Tauck has long been recognized as a luxury company on both land and sea. Their popular Bridges program for families expanded into the river cruise arena 7 years ago. Itineraries include the Seine, Rhine and Danube rivers with activities that appeal to children, their parents, and their grandparents. Tauck river cruises are all inclusive, meaning all beverages and gratuities are included. Nothing is additional. Tauck has the most 300 sq. Ft suites on the Europe’s waterways, each equipped with a sofa bed so they’re great for families.
MILLENNIALS
Uniworld has long been recognized as a luxury brand for river cruising. In 2017 they introduced a totally new product called U by Uniworld. Geared to the 21-45 age groups, you cannot even sail if you are over 45. They have totally revamped several of their ships to appeal to this specific group.
U has turned river cruising on its ear. Although there is plenty to do on land when docking in the heart of European cities, there is plenty to keep you busy onboard. Paint and Wine sessions, mixology classes, cooking classes, a silent disco and daily yoga are just a few examples. Also, there are 2 bars that include craft beers along with wine and cocktails.
On land, enjoy a bike ride along the Danube, a “Midnight in Paris” evening stroll, vineyard hikes and castle visits. These are just a few examples of the excursions included in the very reasonable price. All in all, an excellent way to tour Europe at a cost effective price with people with similar interests.
ACTIVE SENIORS
As the demographic started to skew younger, Avalon introduced their Active Discovery program to appeal to younger travelers as well as active seniors who desire a broader menu of energetic excursions. Jogging through Amsterdam, a biking tour around Vienna, and a paddling trip down the Danube were added along with a climbing trip up to a medieval castle and hiking in the forest. There are also hands-on experiences such as a painting class in Amsterdam, a tasting of locally produced cheese and beer at an ancient abbey and an early-riser walk to a quaint café. These programs are currently available on the Rhine and Danube.
It is worth noting that Avalon, AMA and Uniworld all carry bicycles on all their cruises and offer bike tours in additional to traditional excursions.
SINGLES
Single travelers have long been aware of the penalty of traveling solo. When cruising on ocean lines, they usually have to pay a supplement for a single stateroom- often twice the price. Most of the river cruise companies, including Avalon, AMA and Uniworld and Tauck waive the single supplement on select voyages. Sometimes it is limited to specific categories and they will only book a certain number of single cabins without the supplement on each cruise. To avoid disappointment, you should book early for these cruises.
